It won’t be the first or last time I’ll be called elitist for the subject of this blog. And I’ve been called to task many times for my European nostalgia. Americans typically like to be loved. Me included. Even for those of us who don’t buy into the nationalism, the flag waving, the-hand-over-heart displays of affection for home and country. Whatever it is–patriotism, a simple human desire to be liked, most of America is into it. And I don’t want to make it sound like Europe is all peonies and pate. In fact, many of my European friends could (barring the whole 8-years-of-Bush thing) write their own blog called “Be American or Die Tryin.” In an attempt to capture what keeps me here in the states and remind me of what I used to miss when I lived in Europe, I will also sometimes post blogs on what we do well. From dive bars to college, we do a few things really well. Stay tuned for more on this subject, and send me your suggestions for postings on what it is Americans do better.

Let me give you a little help here. What we do better is send our children off to universities to get indoctrinated by liberals to push their Socialist ideology to destroy our Capitalist society. You may think of yourself as an individualist, but ‘the emperor has no clothes’, you’re a lemming trying to disguise yourself as an elitist.
What made us better—we didn’t have socialized healthcare!!!!!
No country gives more support to the world both financial and with the blood of our soldiers than America and yet allows you the freedom to criticise with an ungrateful smirk on your face and without any sacrifice from you whatsoever.
America is exceptional, which involves putting your impress on the world, by military prowess initially perhaps, but more solidly by economic and technological advances and ultimately by dazzling cultural achievements that lead to the sincerest form of flattery: the world wants to be like you.
How many other countries are there imigrants (legal or not) rushing the borders with the desire to become citizens?
Liberals like yourself are all too quick to point out Americas flaws. The progressive argument that rejects Americas past, but also its principles–There are no self-evident truths, no permanent rights, no limits on government and progress through a ever expanding nanny state, may well cause Americas demise. Somehow, I don’t expect that to make you sad.
What would make us better? Freedom from liberal idiots hindering the successful.
So please go to Europe, stuff your face with cheese. Do us all a favor and die tryin.

Dear Patrick,
Thanks so much for your passionate comment. Clearly, you have some strong opinions on the subject. And, I’m frankly surprised it took this long to get a comment like this given the polarized nature of our country today. I actually received this coming back from Europe this week; the message from WordPress to approve it was the first email I opened when I landed in Dulles. Rather than respond entirely here, I will be posting your comment on the front page of the blog, and will share with you my thoughts there.
